M T Woollaston
Artwork Detail
This early painting shows the influence of Woollaston's sometime teacher Robert Nettleton Field, an Englishman brought to New Zealand under the La Trobe scheme for art education. Field's modern outlook greatly assisted the development of Woollaston's own style, as did notes on Cezanne supplied by the expatriate painter Flora Scales. Field bought the painting from Woollaston's first one-person exhibit, held in Dunedin in 1936.
