Gretchen Albrecht
Artwork Detail
When Gretchen Albrecht painted Golden Cloud, she was living on the west coast of Auckland. This painting was based on a watercolour sketch she made on the beach at sunset, and the luminous colours marry the artist’s observation of the
scene with her emotional response to it. Despite the very real touchstone of the Auckland landscape informing this work, at the time it was made Albrecht’s paintings were often understood in relation to international influences, especially of
American colour field painters such as Mark Rothko.
