Mark Gertler
Artwork Detail
In spite of the fact the artist and sitter were involved in an affair at the time this work was painted it seems quite detached, perhaps reflecting the fact that Dobrée was married. Gertler also stated his opinion that ‘I like women to be my friends and equals, or superiors, as the case may be. Not half mistress and half slave…’ His dignified portrayal of Dobrée reflects such liberated views. (Intimate Portraits, 2005)
