Jessica Stockholder
Artwork Detail
Jessica Stockholder trained as a painter, and her assemblages of objects retain a painter’s attentiveness to colour accents and composition. Close inspection of this small stack of commonplace things reveals precisely considered relationships of colour, texture and form. An area of paint which extends across a ball of yarn is a cue to understanding Stockholder’s logic of contrast and association. The deep plumage of fake fur contrasts with the plasticky sheen of paint; and popping colour oppositions such as royal purple and margarine yellow make compositional sense of otherwise strange juxtapositions.
