This painting is from Kngwarreye’s Awelye series that is based on the traditions of female body painting amongst the artist’s Eastern Anmatyerre Aboriginal community near Utopia in the Northern Territory of Australia. It also suggests a sequence of linked horizons.
Emily Kame Kngwarreye was one of Australia’s pre-eminent 20th century artists.
