Cecil van Haanen
Artwork Detail
This convivial image of seamstresses pausing from their work details some of the tools and processes involved in their craft. In the foreground a fashion illustration, probably torn from a popular magazine, sits atop a length of cloth laid out for cutting. The flat iron in the lower right would have been heated on a stove-top and on the left, a collapsible wooden cotton winder holds the thread ready for use. The seamstresses were probably friends of the Dutch artist, then living at San Trovaso in Venice.
