exhibition Details
Jointly developed by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and Te Papa, Robin White: Te Whanaketanga | Something is Happening Here is a retrospective exhibition of work by contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand artist Dame Robin White (Ngāti Awa, Pākehā).
For over 50 years, White has portrayed people and their environments in Aotearoa New Zealand, Kiribati, Fiji, Tonga and beyond. These places – and the people she’s forged relationships with – have transformed her life and art.
Robin White: Te Whanaketanga | Something is Happening Here takes visitors on an intimate journey across place and through time, showcasing the remarkable breadth and continuous innovation in White’s practice. Starting with her iconic New Zealand landscapes and portraits of the 1970s, the exhibition then explores the White’s collaborations with artists from across the Pacific, including Japanese artists Keiko Iimura and Taeko Ogawa and her large-scale tapa works with Tongan artists, Ruha and Ebonie Fifita, and Fijian artist, Tamari Cabeikanacea.
A project of national importance, Robin White: Te Whanaketanga | Something is Happening Here features works from across a 50-year career and builds on over a decade of research. It is supported by an accompanying publication, Robin White: Something is Happening Here, which includes fresh perspectives by 24 writers and interviewees from Aotearoa, Australia and Te Moana Nui a Kiwa, the Pacific.
