Join us for an exciting opportunity to explore hidden treasures within our own Tāmaki Makaurau. With thanks to the Studio of St John the Baptist, be introduced to the hidden world of these sacred and mysterious images right here in Takapuna.
To mark the exhibition Heavenly Beings: Icons of the Christian Orthodox World on show at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, the Studio is generously opening its doors to those interested in knowing more about their work and methods and the long history of these 'ever ancient and ever new images'.
The introductory tours will reveal the origins of these images and their purpose, and the techniques used in their production. This is an opportunity for those interested in a more hands on experience to participate in a more comprehensive workshop setting.
The Studio of St John the Baptist has been in operation producing sacred iconography since its inception in 2004. It specialises in the production of “icons” according to the traditional methods. It teaches the making of Italian gesso, gild (gold) in the challenging wet gilding method as well as the more accessible transfer method. Images are written (painted) using egg tempera.
The Studio has completed works for cathedrals in New Zealand and overseas, as well as many churches, schools and private chapels.
Work has also been carried out in mosaic, stained glass, and stone sculpture. Learn more about the studio here
