Join Senior Curator of International Art, Dr Sophie Matthiesson to hear the story behind the creation of Claude Monet’s extraordinary water gardens at Giverny and the evolution of his Japanese bridge series, culminating in a discussion of a late bridge painting made by Monet, on loan at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Sophie was Melbourne’s lead curator of the exhibition Monet’s Garden: The Musée Marmottan-Monet at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2013.
This event is part of the Mackelvie Society Lecture Series 2021. Four lectures are hosted online via Zoom, one is onsite in the Auckland Art Gallery Auditorium, and all are free to members of the Gallery and the Mackelvie Society.

About the speaker: Senior Curator of International Art, Dr Sophie Matthiesson has more than 20 years’ experience as a curator and educator in England and Australia including Curator of International Art at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2007-2019). In her role at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, Sophie develops and manages the Gallery’s historical and modern international collection, including the Mackelvie collection.
About The Mackelvie Society: In 1885 the collection of James Mackelvie was bequeathed to the people of Auckland and the Mackelvie Trust was established to maintain this legacy. Today collection is shared between Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira and Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections.
