Jacob Epstein
Artwork Detail
Epstein’s monographer, Richard Buckle, remarked that ‘A pictorial genealogical tree could be made of Epstein’s family from Epstein’s drawings and sculptures of them.’ Not only did he draw, model or carve each of his five children, but he also recorded some of their spouses and children.
Son of Epstein’s daughter, Peggy Jean, Ian was sculpted as an active, chubby cheeked toddler. Two versions of the work exist, one a portrait head and the other a bust. With arms outstretched and eyes intently focused, Epstein’s portrait of his grandson is very engaging. (Intimate Portraits, 2005)
