Gordon Walters
Artwork Detail
This painting was created in Australia after Walters' research in Europe and prior to his return to New Zealand. Like a trip switch, the painting is continually shifting between diagonal and vertical emphasis. The white horizontal reinforces the sense of a mirroring structure within the composition. It was many years before Gordon Walters chose to publicly exhibit these paintings because he believed that New Zealand was completely unsympathetic to such painting.
