Charles F Goldie
Artwork Detail
This work offers an intimate account of Māori migration, which is in stark contrast to the grand drama of Goldie’s collaboration with Louis John Steele, The Arrival of the Māoris in New Zealand.
Painted on the lid of a cigar box forty years after The Arrival, it depicts an elderly woman and young child watching a model canoe. One can imagine her telling the story of Te Arawa sailing from Hawaiki and arriving on these shores. (Picturing History, 2009)
