John Bratby
Artwork Detail
Portraiture was an ongoing preoccupation of the English artist John Bratby. Over the course of his career, he did numerous self-portraits, a number of which, like this work, include several views of the artist. He elaborated that the reason behind his obsession with painting himself was not ‘egocentricity or vanity. I was the most pliable and obedient model. All one needed was a mirror.’ (Intimate Portraits, 2005)
