Oblivion

Brent Harris produced this print following the opening of his 2023 exhibition, Brent Harris: The Other Side at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. The artist explains,

‘I identify the character in this image as a stand in for the artist, but really for every viewer, as a reflection of the self, or a reflecting self.

He has appeared most recently on the wall at the entrance to my exhibition ‘the other side’ at AAG, and also makes an appearance on the first print in the series ‘the other side’ in the collection of AAG.

In this new print, he is contemplating the cosmos. The print carries the title ‘oblivion’, referring to a state of being unaware or unconscious of what is happening around one.

Oblivion for me… is something to contemplate, something empty of the self, yet full of unknown possibility, as if we can ever comprehend the cosmos.’ Brent Harris, 2023
