Colin McCahon
Artwork Detail
For some months in 1939 Colin McCahon lived at Mapua, near Nelson. When he was not employed on seasonal work in the area he was able to discuss art with a group of friends including Doris Lusk, Toss Woollaston, Rodney Kennedy, Patrick Hayman and Anne Hamblett, who later married McCahon. This drawing shows that McCahon responded to place in both a profound and direct manner. The heat of summer is palpably present.
