Gottfried Lindauer
Artwork Detail
Rangi Topeora was undeniably a major figure of her time, as evidenced by her being one of only five female signatories to Te Tiriti O Waitangi. This painting is based on an early photograph which shows Topeora adorned with multiple heitiki. This makes manifest the considerable mana accorded to her by lineage, but also by her actions as a peacemaker, composer and living treasure of Ngāti Toa Rangatira.
