Rebecca Swan
Artwork Detail
This image features an androgynous woman dressed in a man’s suit. There are two other images reproduced in the publication Assume Nothing, Heather #1 and Heather #2, which show the same sitter, New Zealand artist Heather Straka. During the 1990s, Straka regularly wore men’s suit, and she collaborated with artist Julia Morrison. Together they developed projects including Madame and the Bastard. This body of work explored gender roles in a series of 63 photographs, which expanded into a group of short films 30 seconds long. Their collaboration is profiled here https://www.nzonscreen.com/title/madame-morison-2005
