On page 98 of Assume Nothing Karl is quoted stating; ‘Fa’afafine have existed in the Pacific for hundreds of years. Throughout the Pacific we have this person but called by different names. In the kingdom of Tonga we are called fakafafine but more latterly fakaleiti a transliteration of “being a lady”. In the Cook Islands we are known as akavaine. Mahu is the name in Tahiti Hawaii.’
