Unknown artist (Artist), Wenceslaus Hollar (After), Anthony van Dyck (After)
Artwork Detail
This print is a copy of Hollar’s etched portrait of King
Charles I, seen against the backdrop of London, his
former capital. Hollar’s original etching was made in the
year that the king was executed and would have been
popular among those distressed by the disruption of
the old political order. Given the topical nature of this
subject and the general popularity of his work, many of
Hollar’s prints were copied during his lifetime.
