Biography
Reece King, born in Tamaki Makaurau in 1989, grew up in Te Henga on Auckland’s west coast. King graduated from Unitec, Auckland with a Bachelors of Design and Visual Arts in 2012 and a Masters in Painting in 2021. In 2020, he was one of the founding artists of the ‘painter-run’ space, Sanc near Auckland’s Karangahape Road. In the same year, King was the recipient of the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Award.

King’s practice often features details and subtleties within the layers of paint that begin to reveal themselves upon close inspection and the closer you look the more aspects are revealed. For King, painting is a method of understanding the surrounding world rather than the communication of a particular sentiment. In this way, he invites the viewer to experience his work on their own terms without needing to understand any surrounding contextual connotations.
