Tony Fomison Studio Papers

Tony Fomison Studio Papers

Archive Collection Detail

Tony Fomison (1939-1990) attended Canterbury Art School originally studying sculpture. From the 1960s on he turned to painting and works on paper almost exclusively. As well as landscapes and self-portraits, Fomison is known for his dark figurative works on such subjects as jesters, puppets and mythological characters. Living in Auckland for much of his life, he had a strong connection to the local Samoan community. In addition, the archive reflects his interest and work with South Island Maori rock art. The archive consists of painting log books, sketch books, slides, photographs, works on paper, manuscript material, early school books, publications and ephemera, including many source images for Fomison's art work.
