Peter Tomory (1922-2008 ) was an esteemed art historian, art museum director& academic. Born in Hong Kong in 1922, he was educated in India and the U.K. and joined the Royal Naval Reserve in 1940. After the War, Tomory gained a Master's of Art at the University of Edinburgh and began a career in the fine arts which included positions at the art galleries of Leicester and York, the Ringling Museum, Florida and the directorship of the Auckland City Art Gallery from 1956-65. Academic appointments were held at the Universities of Auckland and Columbia; Hunter College, New York; and La Trobe University, Melbourne. Tomory returned to the United Kingdom upon retirement in 1987.The archive consists of diaries, lecture notes, academic research notes, academic publications, personal writing, personal ephemera & correspondence.
