Archive Collection Detail
Luc Peire (1916-1994) was a Belgian painter and sculptor, commissioned by the Auckland City Council to construct the futuristic Environment III for the Auckland Festival of May 1973 in the Auckland City Art Gallery. This 30 page scrapbook of black and white photographs documents the construction process prior to its opening to the public. Viewers entered Environment III one at a time and experienced an illusion of weightlessness in the black and white vertically-painted and mirrored cell. Note that the Auckland Art Gallery now uses an alternative title for this artwork as designated by the artist upon the occasion of its accession into the Collection, which is "Tower". A notebook with instructions for construction by John Perry (1943-2021) is also included.
