Charles Frederick Goldie (1870-1947), painter, studied at the Julian Academy in Paris and Ecole des Beaux Arts. Well known for his portraits of Maori, he also taught art. The notes relate to the following Goldie works and are in the artist's hand: Sleep tis a Gentle Thing, The Calm Close of Life's Long Day and A Sullen Silent Southern Chief
