My work reflects a journey into the past, to honour ancient ancestors who explored and settled the Pacific thousands of years ago. Their existence was hidden until very recent times, but they left a rich visual legacy in dentate patterning on beautiful ceramic pots, patterns that continue to evolve in the creative works of their Polynesian descendants.

Tāniko is a traditional finger woven embroidery that creates dynamic geometric patterns which are frequently encountered in the borders of korowai (woven cloaks). In this work Colleen Waata Urlich references the tāniko patterning and in doing so brings together the artistic traditions of clay and weaving.
