Artwork Detail

Tūranganui-a-Kiwa is the largest of several small bays on the coast north of Hawke’s Bay. It stretches for 10 kilometres from Young Nick’s Head in the southwest to Tuaheni Point in the northeast. *Turbulence*, 2019 alludes to Captain Cook’s two-day visit to Turanganui-a-Kiwa in 1769 and the events that led to the name change from Tūranganui-a-Kiwa to Poverty Bay. That first encounter led to the death of Te Maro during a skirmish with the crew. This history and the lasting impact on Māori in the region is referenced in *Turbulence*.
