Artwork Detail

Ko te mahi toi a Matthew McIntyre-Wilson he toi whakarākei, he mahi ā-ringa, he hanga taonga; ko tāna he kōrero mō te whakapapa o te kaupapa whakarākei mā te whakamahi hou i ngā rawa, i ngā tauira, i ngā kakano o ngā taonga o mua. Hangaia ai ngā miro o tēnei hei ki ngā weu o te taiao, i konei kua miria kētia ki ngā kanoi konukura, hiriwa me te hiraka, he whakaatu i ngā whanaungatanga ringapā, ataata, ā-tohu hou i waenga i te taonga me te kaiwhakamau, mā reira e panoni ai te rākeitanga o te poi i te tinana.

Working across the disciplines of jewellery, craft and object-making, Matthew McIntyre-Wilson engages in korero (conversation) with the whakapapa (genealogy) of adornment by reenvisaging the materials, patterns and textures of customary Māori taonga (treasures). Here the strings of the poi necklace, traditionally made from natural fibres, are intricately woven from strands of copper, silver and silk, suggesting new tactile, optical and symbolic relationships between object and wearer that alter how the poi adorns the body.
