Artwork Detail

The title of Gary Whiting’s immersive video work *Whakarongo ki Nga Tipuna I & II*, 2015 translates to ‘Listen to the ancestors’. The video is filled with the sounds of wind, birds and rustling toetoe bushes – living sounds which balance against the abstracted video. Toetoe are highly valued plants used in the interiors of buildings and especially in the tukutuku panels (decorative wall panels) of wharenui (meeting houses), in which they are woven to create lattice-like patterns. Whiting splices toetoe together to create an almost kaleidoscopic experience – a moving lattice of pattern and thrumming sound.
