Theology and religion are inescapably linked but nonetheless distinct. A new publication No Idols: The Missing Theology of Art by US art historian and critic Thomas Crow seeks to recover the theological import in the work of six essential artists against commonplace notions of the religious or spiritual, among them Colin McCahon and Sister Mary Corita Kent. Both McCahon and Kent set out to create a valid religious art in a time when the very category seemed compromised beyond recovery. By related but opposed theologies, that is, conceptions of the divine against its idolatrous, human centred simulations, both of them succeeded.
